ARK Breeding Guide & Breed Times

Breeding is a feature that is being introduced into ARK and constantly being improved upon. Breeding is a feature that allows players to breed creatures using Fertilized Eggs. Sucessfully breeding a creature will provide you with a baby dinosaur that will be tamed without having to go through the normal routine of taming a creature by knocking it out and force feeding it food.

How to Start Breeding

The first important thing you need in order to start with your breeding farm is to obtain fertilized eggs or to get a female dinosaur pregnant. If you get two creatures of opposite gender and set them both to “Wander” this will allow them to mate. I suggest keeping them both in a secluded area so that they will not wander far from each other. Once the two creatures are together you will notice a heart icon above their head, this indicates that they are starting the mating process.

You will also notice a mating bar appear over the female’s head. Once the mating bar is completely filled, the female will either drop a fertilized egg or become pregnant. Be sure to keep in mind that once you mate two dinosaurs that the female dinosaur won’t be able to mate again until their waiting period is over. The male can mate as soon as the first mating process is over, so it is often a technique to breed one male with a bunch of different females.

Once you obtain a fertilized egg it begins to start incubation. The Fertilized Egg will not spoil if you keep the egg at the correct temperature. It is important to make sure you know the temperature necessary to complete the fertilized egg process so you do not mess up the process and have to start over. If the egg is outside of its temperature, you will notice a health bar on the egg and if it goes down it will be destroyed. If you do not have the means to incubate the temperature right away, you can keep them in your inventory as they will not lose health in your inventory. You can also keep them in a preserving bin or a refrigerator.

For incubating I recommend using a standing torch, a regular torch, or a campfire to maintain higher temperatures. Air conditioners also work as they can both heat the egg and cool them down when needed. A fun tip is that 8 air conditioners is enough to heat and cool any egg in the game. If you have a female that is pregnant you will have to cater to her and make sure she is constantly fed or the baby will die and you will have to restart the process. Be sure to make sure your food troughs are packed and watch them carefully to make sure they don’t completely die out.

Once a new baby is born, you must first be sure to claim it. Babies initially have no owner so you must approach the pet and claim it as your own before someone else does it. Be sure to make sure the pet is not set to aggressive as other dinosaurs and turrets will attack it.

Once the creature is hatched and claimed as your own, you must make sure to care for it. Babies have very low health so you must carefully feed them and keep their temperature regulated so they do not die due to extreme weather. The babies must be fed by putting food into their inventory so be sure to add food. Once they reach a certain age or “maturity level” the babies will begin to eat from a feeding trough.

Feeding babies requires lots of food as they eat a lot more than regular mature adult dinosaurs. To completely mature a carnivore, it takes a minimum of 2 days in real time. If you ever miss a feeding period it will cause the baby to take longer to mature as they normally would. Also, be prepared for multiple creatures to be hatched from an egg or a mother. There is approximately a 10% chance of having twins, and a 3% chance of having triplets.

Food Values

Food Values determine how fast the baby dinosaur will mature; the higher the food value, the faster the baby will mature.

Carnivores (Kibble will actually work for both Carnivores and Herbivores, although it is not efficient for raising a baby in its most immature phase)

Kibble – 80 Food Value

Raw Prime Meat – 50 Food Value

Spoiled Meat (Only for Scorpions) – 50 Food Value

Cooked Prime Meat/Prime Meat Jerky – 50 Food Value

Raw Meat – 50 Food Value

Cooked Meat/Cooked Meat Jerky – 25 Food Value

Advanced Crops (Citronal, Longrass, Rockarrot, and Savoroot) – 40 Food Value

Mejo Berries – 30 Food Value

Other Berries (Amarberry, Azulberry, Mejoberry, Narcoberry, Stimberry, and Tintoberry) 20 Food Value

If you wish to see the progress you are at with the baby you have, you can divide the weight that the creature can carry (the number in the top right of their inventory) by the weight they can carry total (the number in the bottom right corner) and multiply this by 100.

The breakdown of maturity progress is as follows:

0-10% are babies

10-50% are juveniles

50-100% are adolescents

Times for Breeding

The following table is a complete breakdown of the temperature needed for the egg, and the length of time the baby will remain in each phase of maturity. All of the following minimum and maximum temperatures are in Celsius. If you wish to convert to Fahrenheit, you can multiply the Celsius temperature by 9, divide by 5, and then add 32.

The following creatures do not require any specific temperature so they are in the following table:

Stats of the Babies

The baby will inherit the base stats of the parents. These stats are called natural stats. There is also a 70% chance that the baby will inherit the stronger stat of the two parents. If you wish to maximize the stats of the baby, be sure to select the parents wisely. If you wish to have a high health, be sure to select a parent that is specialized in that area and breed it with another parent that is specialized in another stat. If you do this for at least 3 generations, the best stats will be present in the offspring and you will have the best possible stats through breeding.

You can determine the level of the baby by the levels invested in the parents. If Dinosaur A has 30 points into health and Dinosaur B has 30 points invested into stamina, the baby will inherit 60 levelups. The other possibilities that could occur are a level 31 baby with all stats in health, or a level 31 baby with all stats in stamina.
