Dilophosaur Dino Dossier
Common Name: Dilophosaur
Species: Dilophosaurs Sputatrix
Time: Early Jurassic
Dilophosaurs are skittish, meaning that they will attack you only if you come close enough. They have two main attacks. The first attack is a ranged poison spit, and the second is a powerful bite. Dilophosaurs do not live in packs, but can often be found with 1-2 other Dilophosaurs. Dilophosaurs will not attack other dinosaurs, but they do like to feed on the dead bodies of other dinosaurs.
Dilophosaurs can be found in basically any enviornment on the island, from swamps to beaches. They are most commonly found on the southeast side of the island. Dilophosaurs can be found in a range of colors too. From green to a dark blue, they come in all different shades and variations. Killing a Dilophosaur will yield Hide, Raw Meat, or Nerdry Glasses. Nerdry Glasses are a skin that can be used to alter the appearance of another piece of headgear. It will change the head piece into a pair of glasses. It provides nothing other than an aesthetic change.
Dilophosaurs can be found near the beaches and for most survivors, are the very first dinosaur that a new player will see. All that is really needed to kill one of these tiny dinosaurs is a spear. They are relatively slow and their attacks can be dodged really easily. You can tell when they are about to spit because they will stand still and start to pull their head back. Getting hit by their poison spit will slow your movement speed and cause your screen to go grey and fuzzy, making it harder for you to see.
They are relatively weak compared to most dinosaurs. At level 50, it would only take 13 hits with a slingshot to knock it out, or 4 tranquilizer bows. It only takes 11 Raw Prime Meat to tame a Dilophosaur. Dilos do have eggs that drop. The eggs are randomly dropped and can be used to make Kibble that is great for taming Ankylos, Doedicurus, or Pachys. If you pick one of these eggs up in the presence of other Dilophosaurs, they will instantly become aggressive towards you and attack.
Dilophosaurs are great for a new player to have as a companion as they provide a decent carry capacity to help you along your adventures. They also have the ability to slow other dinosaurs, aiding you when trying to tame others. They are also really easy to kill, making them a great source of meat for players who are just starting off with the game.
The drop of “Nerdry Glasses” are a reference to Dennis Nedry from Jurassic Park who was killed by a group of Dilophosaurs. In real life, Dilophosaurs were over 20 feet long, and there was no evidence of them being able to spit poison. This dinosaur was fictionally taken from the Jurassic Park movies.
Wild: Dilophosaurus sputatrix is a strange creature. It stands at just over half the size of known Dilophosaurs, and runs from aggressors as often as it fights them.
Domesticated: Because of their shrill cry and their ability to attack intruders from range, Dilophosaurus seem most suited as “guard dogs”. Due to their small size, they are not suitable as mounts.
Known Information: Dilophosaurus sputatrix has a few traits not common in the Dilophosaurus genus. It has a very shrill call, and a decorative ridge of skin on its neck. I believe these are used to attract mates, as well as intimidate prey and would-be predators. Instead of attacking its prey outright, Dilophosaurus sputatrix spits venom to weaken and paralyze it before moving in for the kill.
