Common Name: Leech
Species: Haementeria laetus
Time Period: Holocene
The leech can be found in the central areas on the island and is one of the most disgusting creatures on the island. Killing a Leech will drop Chitin, Leech Blood, Oil, Raw Meat, or Silica Pearls. You can also pick up Leeches with Kaprosuchus, Megalosaurus, or Tusoteuthis. You can also find the other Leech which is called the Diseased Leech.
This Leech is notable different from the other by its reddish coloring. When you hover over it, it will also be say that it is a Diseased Leech. You can harvest the dead body of a diseased Leech for a lot more Leech Blood than the normal Leech, or you can cure it by giving it lesser antidote.
If you are the server admin, you can spawn Leeches by typing in the following into the console: admincheat summon Leech_Character_C
When you are fighting leeches and trying to farm up the valuable resources that they drop, you will see that they can hang onto your body. If they are leeching onto you, they will slowly drain your health. You can get rid of them by going near either a campfire, or a cooking pot. All you have to do is go into the fire and the leech will detach itself. You may also notice that a leech can connect to one of your dinosaurs, if this happens, you will have to approach the leech and press E on it to remove it.
If you are in an area that has a lot of leeches, you can spray yourself with bug repellant to make yourself invisible to them. If you bump into them, they will still not attack you, they will only attack you at this point if you attack them first. I suggest traveling on a relatively tall mount so that you can remove the leeches from your mount without having to worry about getting leeches on yourself.
A leech can do a lot of damage if it stays connected to either you or your mount. So when you are traveling in swampy areas or areas that have a lot of leeches, be very aware of your hp and the hp of your mount. Leeches are very easy to kill, a simple bow and arrow hit will kill it and you can acquire a lot of resources from killing them. Note that mounts cannot catch the infection that a diseased leech can cause, but humans very much can. If you need to, always travel with antidote when you are going where leeches will be.
Wild: It is difficult to be angry with Haementeria laetus, despite its rather terrible nature. The creature has practically no intelligence, and just attaches to any nearby living flesh in an attempt to drain that creature’s blood.
Domesticated: While Haementeria is not intelligent enough to be tamed, and does not provide a resource any tribe would need in large quantities, it is always useful to keep a few around for antidotes. When processed properly, Haementaria venom can be made into powerful antivenin!
Known Information: Removing Haementeria requires precision bladework, or access to an open flame. Both of these can be nearly as dangerous to the host as to the leech itself. Once Haementeria attaches to a host, it drains blood at a rapid pace, and the host experiences hunger, losses of health, and lowered stamina. Some Haementeria are also carriers for a dangerous disease I’ve dubbed ‘Swamp Fever’, which persists permanently beyond the leech’s own lifespan. Few creatures on the island are transmitters for this disease, and it can ultimately be cured with a rare medicine.
