Common Name: Megalosaurus
Species: Megalosaurus noctedominus
Time Period: Jurassic
The Megalosaurus is a predator who only comes out to hunt at night. During the day, if you encounter one it will be sleeping and passed out. Be wary though that if you encounter one during the day, even touching it will make it instantly arise and cause it to be aggressive towards you. Though, during the day, it is significantly weaker and cannot run as fast as it does during the nighttime.
They are most commonly found in the southern regions of the island and the northern parts of the scorched earth map. Killing one will yield hide, keratin, raw meat, and raw prime meat.
It might be useful for you to know that you can carry a Megalosaurus with a Quetzel, Wyvern, or a Tusoteuthis. You can also completely immobilize one by using a chain bola, large bear trap, or a plant species y trap. These will completely stun them making them vulnerable for you to tame them.
If you have your own server, you can spawn one on command by typing the following into your console: admincheat summon Megalosaurus_Character_BP_C
How to Tame & Ride the Megalosaurus
If you want to have an easier time knocking one of these guys out, I recommend first having a good idea of their sleeping schedule. They wake up at around 20 on the world clock regardless of its current condition. When it is awake, I recommend knocking it out, and using a method called starve taming. You can do this by waiting for the Megalosaurus food meter to be completely gone, and then feeding it all of the food at once.
If you are encountering a level 30 Megalosaurus you need to hit it with a slingshot 87 times, a tranquilizer arrow 24 times, or a tranquilizer dart 10 times. Alternatively, you can wait until it is day time and the Megalosaurus is naturally knocked out. Once it is knocked out, you will not need narcotics if you use kibble, raw mutton, cooked lamb, or raw prime meat. You can use all of these to eliminate the use of narcotics, and the taming time will vary. The fastest way to tame it is to use raw mutton which will only take about 25 minutes.
How to Breed a Megalosaurus
Note that the way to breed a Megalosaurus is a little bit different because of its sleeping schedule. The most important thing to know when breeding a Megalosaurus is to NEVER hatch an egg during the day because it can actually die from being too weak from the sunlight. Whenever you do hatch it, you have to make sure you set the dinosaur to stay awake. It will eventually become unconscious, but we are doing that to make it consume food faster so that it will grow at a faster rate. You can just repeat this process and eventually you’ll have your own full grown Megalosaurus!
Once you have your own Megalosaurus, it’ll be nice to know that it provides an amazing amount of utility to your tribe. They can carry any creature that has a weight of 150 or less. The following creatures are all carriable by the Megalosaurus: Achatina, Araneo, Archaeopteryx, Arthopleura, Baryonyx, Beezlebufo, Castoriodes, Compy, Dilophosaur, Direwolf, Dodo, Dung Beetle, Leech, Megaloceros, Moschops, Oviraptor, Ovis, Pachy, PArasaur, Phimia, Raptor, Sabertooth, Titanoboa. Note that it can pick up a lot of aquatic animals, but pulling them out of water will kill them instantly.
Now, being able to carry such a wide variety of creatures is a great thing because it can be used to move creatures when they are tranquilizer so you can tame them significantly easier. Another great thing about the Megalosaurus is that they are extremely strong during the night. They have tons of stamina and attack at night, making them one of the most powerful mounts for raiding another player’s base at night time. They can also farm raw meat at a relatively efficient pace.
Wild: Much like the Island’s other large theropods, Megalosaurus noctedominus is an aggressive carnivore that should not be taken lightly. Unlike most of the other theropods, it is a primarily nocturnal creature. As dawn approaches, Megalosaurus begins looking for a secluded place to spend the day sleeping in relative safety.
Domesticated: While Megalosaurus is not the most powerful theropod, it is still highly sought after by night-raiders. Due to its nocturnal nature, Megalosaurus becomes much more formidable at night – dodging attacks, conserving stamina, and attacking more accurately, to name a few of its enhanced talents.
Known Information: Conversely, if disturbed during the day, Megalosaurus is significantly more sluggish. Either way, however, its primary combat tactic is to bite onto its target, then lock its jaws shut in an iron-strength grip. Only larger creatures can hope to break free once Megalosaurus locks its jaw. The creature then proceeds to gnaw on its prey until death. It’s a terrifying, grisly spectacle to watch, and a formidable tactic for a tribe to employ against more nimble targets.
