Pteranodon Dino Dossier

Common Name: Pteranodon

Group: Reptiles

Species: Pteranodon wyvernus

Time: Late Cretaceous

Diet: Carnivore

Temperament: Skittish

Tamable: Yes

Rideable: Yes

The Pteranodon is skittish, meaning it will fly away when it is attacked. The only case in which it will become aggressive is if it catches you stealing one of its eggs, or attacking its mate. The Pteranodon is the first flying dinosaur available to players, making it the most popular. The Pteranodon will lay Pteranodon Eggs, which can be made into Kibble that the Carbnemys prefers.

The Egg can also be incubated and hatched into a baby Pteranodon. The Pteranodon itself is partial to Kibble that comes from a Dodo Egg. I recommend stocking up on this kibble as it is easy to get your hands on and will speed up the taming process. The Pteranodon is one of the most common creatures on the island, but can be found most commonly in the southeast part of the island. Killing a Pteranodon will yield Raw Meat and Hide.

The Pteranodon can be ridden by using a level 35 Pteranodon Saddle. This Saddle can be found in purple and yellow beacons or unlocked with 15 Engram Points. Combining 230 hide, 125 fiber, and 75 chitin or keratin will craft this Saddle.

Knocking out a Pteranodon is relatively easy. I suggest using a tranquilizer arrow if you have access to them as it will not take too many to get the job done. Just make sure when you do shoot it with a tranquilizer arrow that you do not do so while it is flying over any bodies of water as it will drown when it hits the ground. A good strategy is to watch a Pteranodon until it lands and then shoot it because the Pteranodon will not have enough stamina to fly away. The Pteranodon will land on its own when it is below half stamina.

Just aware that the Pteranodon has low health and take extra damage from ranged attacks.  At level 50, it will only take 2 tranquilizer darts, 8 tranquilizer arrows, or 28 hits with a slingshot to knock out a Pteranodon. Its preferred kibble comes from a Dodo Egg. It would only take 15 kibble and 198 narcotics with a total taming time of 59:58. Using Raw Prime Meat in lieu of kibble will take a total of 38 Raw Prime Meat, 353 narcotics, and a total time of 1:35:01.

Flying a Pteranodon is similar to moving your character on the ground, however there are some differences. One diference is that it will only move up with a command. If you feed a Stimberry or Stimulant, you can fly for a longer period of time. You land a Pteranodon by pressing space. You can also perform a roll in the air by pressing C, this will cause the Pteranodon to do a lot more damage at the cost of some stamina.

The Pteranodon has one of the highest base speeds in the game, meaning it is a perfect companion to scout out new areas with. It can also serve as a transport vehicle, due to its high weight and stamina. If you become proficient with the barrel roll, you can turn the Pteranodon into a war machine. The added damage and quick flying abilities make it easy to do a lot of damage and fly away safely.

The Pteranodon has the ability to harvest Raw Meat and Hide by setting it to wander. The Pteranodon also has the ability to carry some small creatures. You can do this by pressing right click while flying above the creature. The Pteranodon cannot attack while it is carrying a creature, so be sure to keep this in mind. The creature that the Pteranodon is carrying cannot attack the Pteranodon. The Pteranodon can carry the following creatures: Compy, Dodo, Dilophosaur, Humans, Kairuku, Mesopithecus, Turkey, and Oviraptor.

Keep this in mind as it can make the taming process for these creatures a lot easier. You can pick up one of these creatures and fly them into a small shack with windows where you can shoot tranquilizer darts at it until it is knocked out and tame it a lot easier.

Tamed Pteranodons will not fly when you set them to wander, making the breeding process a lot easier and lets you get a lot of eggs without any worry. The Pteranodon is one of the fastest moving animals in the game, so setting it to follow you can be tricky as it will often get ahead of you and get stuck on things.

Wild: Pteranodon wyvernus is a large pterosaur, capable of flying for incredibly long periods. While others I’ve seen on the island still call it a Pterodactyl, this is inaccurate.

Domesticated: I don’t know how they did it, but I once saw a trio of Pteranodons with riders on them. This must be the fastest way to get around the island, but it can’t provide any measure of safety or secrecy.

Known Information: The Pteranodon seems to be one of the least aberrant Reptile on the island. Pteranodon wyvernus mostly feeds itself by eating the small fish around the island, but they can also be found scavenging any number of dead animals. Because of this they are one of the most common Creatures on the island.
